Yarn Basket + Graphic Pattern

I am loving my new project storage basket!  This was a project I saved specifically to work on during my holidays this summer.

This is an original pattern by Stephanie Lou of All About Ami with a little bit of a twist!  Instead of using the heart graphic from the original, I designed a yarn ball graphic because I knew I wanted to use this for yarn storage.

The original pattern also calls for Lion Brand’s Home Town USA yarn but I couldn’t find it in any stores near by.  After a lengthy scavenger hunt online, I just went to Michaels to take a better look and then I found the perfect substitute by Loops & Threads.  It has the same weight and feel and even costs a little less!  Plus I got them all at 50% off so that’s a double bonus.

I used Loops & Threads Cozy Wool in the colors Fleece, Pewter, Sapphire and Sea Storm.  When I first started the bottom of the basket, I only had a plastic hook with me.  This is made very hard on my hands and I also think I crocheted the bottom a little too tightly.  Once I switched to a metal hook, my hands hurt a lot less and I was able to control the tightness better.  I am much happier with how the top turned out as opposed to the bottom.  I have it filled right now with yarn hoping it will stretch out a little but if not, I might frog the whole thing and start again.

I love the size and shape of this basket.. but most of all I love the stitching!  This look is accomplished by doing your single crochets into the post instead of the top of the stitch.  I love getting to try new stitches!  It’s fascinating to me how many different looks you can get using just yarn and a hook. 🙂

Would you like to make a basket of your own? Check out the pattern over at All About Ami and below is the graphic part of the pattern re-written for the yarn ball, along with a graph to guide you.  The graphic in the pattern starts at Row 15.
