It seems that all little boys love cars and trucks. With mommy and daddy both working in the traffic operations industry, I loved the idea of this hat.. and my son does too. In fact it’s the only one he’ll let me put on his head now!
I adapted this pattern from a knit hat that I saw on Lion Brand’s website. Here is what I did…
- Lion Brand’s Vanna’s Choice yarn in Silver Heather (for the hat and accents) and Charcoal Grey (for the road), Red Heart’s Super Saver in White, Gold, Hot Red and Blue (for cars and accents) and Impeccable in Kelly Green (for the truck and accents)
- Size H hook
- Tapestry Needle
Hat Pattern: Repeat Crafter Me
*Once I got to the last 2 rows in the hat before the rim, I changed to the darker grey then I took white and sewed it in between the rows to make it looks like pavement markings like on a road.
After that I made 3 appliques to “drive on the road”.
Ch 16, turn.
Row 2: SC into 2nd chain from hook and all the way across. Ch 1, turn. (15 SC)
Row 3: SC in each stitch across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 4: Slip stitch in first 4 SC, chain 4, skip 2 SC and TC into next, TC, slip stitch in next 7 SC and then continue to slip stitch all around.
Wheels (make 2):
With gray, magic ring 4.
Join black, 2 SC in each stitch around. Fasten off and attach to truck.
Race-car: This one was a bit more complicated and I don’t remember how I did it. I didn’t have a pattern so I just looked at an applique that was already made and just tried different stitched until it ended up like this.
For the pom pom, I used the red, gold and green to match the colors in a traffic signal.
This is one of our go-to hat and I always get compliments on it. My son has recently taken to monster trucks so I’m thinking of making another similar with monster trucks instead of cars. Stay tuned!
